Attitude Adjustment for a Sublux-Nation

A Thought Provoking Story

When I read this post many thoughts went through my mind. As you read this, think about how you treat others, whether they are in your immediate family or not. The Biblical principle of treating others as you would want to be treated is something that I have tried to instill in my children. The best way to instill this principle is to live it out for them to see rather than just for them to hear!

It’s a thought provoking post. Let me know what you think!

A story is told about a soldier who was finally coming home after having fought in a war. He called his parents from a phone. “Mum and Dad, I’m coming home, but I’ve a favor to ask. I have a friend I’d like to bring home with me.” “Sure,” they replied, “we’d love to meet him.”

“There’s something you should know the son continued, “he was hurt pretty badly in the fighting. He stepped on a land mine and lost an arm and a leg. He has nowhere else to go, and I want him to come and live with us.”

“I’m sorry to hear that, son. Maybe we can help him find somewhere to live.” “No, Mom and Dad, I want him to live with us.” “Son,” said the father, “you don’t know what you’re asking. Someone with such a handicap would be a terrible burden on us. We have our own lives to live, and we can’t let something like this interfere with our lives. I think you should just come home and forget about this guy. He’ll find a way to live on his own.”

At that point, the son hung up the phone. The parents heard nothing more from him. A few days later, however, they received a call from the police. Their son had died after falling from a building, they were told. The police believed it was suicide. The grief-stricken parents flew to where he was and were taken to the city morgue to identify the body of their son. They recognized him, but to their horror they also discovered something they didn’t know, their son had only one arm and one leg.

The parents in this story are like many of us. We find it easy to love those who are good-looking or fun to have around, but we don’t like people who inconvenience us or make us feel uncomfortable. We would rather stay away from people who aren’t as healthy, beautiful, or smart as we are.

Study Finds Special 'Atlas Adjustment' Lowers Blood Pressure

By Daniel J. DeNoon

Reviewed by Louise Chang, MD

March 16, 2007 -- A special chiropractic adjustment can significantly lower high blood pressure, a placebo-controlled study suggests.

"This procedure has the effect of not one, but two blood-pressure medications given in combination," study leader George Bakris, MD, tells WebMD. "And it seems to be adverse-event free. We saw no side effects and no problems," adds Bakris, director of the University of Chicago hypertension center.

Eight weeks after undergoing the procedure, 25 patients with early-stage high blood pressure had significantly lower blood pressure than 25 similar patients who underwent a sham chiropractic adjustment. Because patients can't feel the technique, they were unable to tell which group they were in.

X-rays showed that the procedure realigned the Atlas vertebra -- the doughnut-like bone at the very top of the spine -- with the spine in the treated patients, but not in the sham-treated patients.

Compared to the sham-treated patients, those who got the real procedure saw an average 14 mm Hg greater drop in systolic blood pressure (the top number in a blood pressure count), and an average 8 mm Hg greater drop in diastolic blood pressure (the bottom blood pressure number).

None of the patients took blood pressure medicine during the eight-week study.

"When the statistician brought me the data, I actually didn't believe it. It was way too good to be true," Bakris says. "The statistician said, 'I don't even believe it.' But we checked for everything, and there it was."

Bakris and colleagues report their findings in the advance online issue of the Journal of Human Hypertension.

Atlas Adjustment and Hypertension

The procedure calls for adjustment of the C-1 vertebra. It's called the Atlas vertebra because it holds up the head, just as the titan Atlas holds up the world in Greek mythology.

Marshall Dickholtz Sr., DC, of the Chiropractic Health Center, in Chicago, is the 84-year-old chiropractor who performed all the procedures in the study. He calls the Atlas vertebra "the fuse box to the body."

"At the base of the brain are two centers that control all the muscles of the body. If you pinch the base of the brain -- if the Atlas gets locked in a position as little as a half a millimeter out of line -- it doesn't cause any pain but it upsets these centers," Dickholtz tells WebMD.

The subtle adjustment is practiced by the very small subgroup of chiropractors certified in National Upper Cervical Chiropractic (NUCCA) techniques. The procedure employs precise measurements to determine a patient's Atlas vertebra alignment. If realignment is deemed necessary, the chiropractor uses his or her hands to gently manipulate the vertebra.

"We are not doctors. We are spinal engineers," Dickholtz says. "We use mathematics, geometry, and physics to learn how to slide everything back into place."

What does this have to do with high blood pressure?

Bakris notes that some researchers have suggested that injury to the Atlas vertebra can affect blood flow in the arteries at the base of the skull. Dickholtz thinks the misaligned Atlas triggers release of signals that make the arteries contract. Whether the procedure actually fixes such injuries is unknown, Bakris says.

Bakris began the study after a fellow doctor told him that something strange was happening in his family practice. The doctor had been sending some of his patients to a chiropractor. Some of these patients had high blood pressure.

Yet after seeing the chiropractor, the patients' blood pressure had normalized -- and a few of them were able to stop taking their blood pressure medications.

So Bakris, then at Rush University, designed the pilot study with 50 patients. He's now organizing a much bigger clinical trial.

"Is it going to be for everybody with high blood pressure? No," Bakris says. "We clearly need to identify those who can benefit. It is pretty clear that some kind of head or neck trauma early in life is related to this. This is really a work in progress. It is certainly in the early stages of research."

Dickholtz has been teaching, practicing, and studying the NUCCA technique for 50 years. He says high blood pressure is far from the only thing an Atlas misalignment causes.

"On the other hand, if people have high blood pressure, there is a tremendous possibility they need an Atlas adjustment," he says.

A Memory Restored

This is the story of Rachael Money.

While still in school, Rachael Money suffered a mental incapacity following an accident in which her head came in violent contact with a concrete sidewalk. After surgery to remove a blot clot Rachael had a loss of memory, depression, mood changes and a generally poor state of health.

Rachael was a straight “A” student, a happy, popular, and energetic young girl. At the age of twelve Rachael headed for the bicycle stand to get her bike to ride home. As she started home, another young boy ran across her path and the two collided, sending Rachael crashing to the ground. Although she was shaken and had hit her head on the concrete she slowly and painfully got up, and although she was in tears, badly shaken and suffering from a pounding headache, she stumbled onto her bicycle and rode home.

By the time she arrived home the shock of the accident wore off and instead of telling her mother what had happened she went straight upstairs to lie down in her bed. Rachael’s mom Louise called her down for dinner and Rachael quietly made her way to the dinner table. In hindsight, Louise should have known something was wrong because Rachael was much more quite than normal, she didn’t eat hardly anything, but it wasn’t until around 10 pm that the horror began.

At 10 pm Rachael began to scream out in excruciating pain, crying and holding her head in her hands. Her mother, of course, had no idea what was going on, but she knew that whatever it was, was serious. Louise immediately called their medical doctor but he was not available, so she talked to another doctor who was on call. The outcome of that discussion was to literally take an aspirin and call back in the morning when their regular physician would be in. Rachael screamed and cried on and off all night long.

By the time the next morning arrived little Rachael was very sick and in a state of semi consciousness. They rushed her to surgery to remove what the medical doctors said was a blood clot that had formed in her brain. Rachael spent two months in the hospital recovering from her surgery. The doctors told Louise that Rachael would never be the same again. They were right. Rachael was a zombie for most of the day. She just existed and she learned absolutely nothing in school. It looked like she would never be a productive part of society again. She dropped out of school. She could not be employed, she was on all types of heavy medication. She could not remember anything, even her own phone number. For all intensive purposes Rachael was gone.

That is, until her mother took her to the chiropractor. Unfortunately, Rachael was 27 at this time (15 years had past). Rachael was evaluated and several severe subluxations were found to exist in her neck, particularly at the very top of her spine. She was adjusted and on the way home she was able to remember her telephone number, and that was just the beginning. As she returned for more adjustments her whole world began to change for the better. She could now read a book and remember the story line.  She could now remember to put water in the pot before putting the pot on the stove. She could remember the time of day. Her life was literally returning to her. Rachael was now able to hold a job and live on her own. Removing the pressure to her central nervous system caused by subluxation released her body from the prison she was shackled to. Rachael’s story is just another testimony to the wonderful human body and the potential that we all have to heal and thrive as long as there are no subluxations robbing us of that ability.

Rachael’s story is also a testament to the fact that medications (drugs) are not the answer to every health problem. In fact, as we have seen tonight drugs are very dangerous, they can kill you or destroy your life. Drugs can also keep you from getting the appropriate care, just like in Rachael’s case.

By the way, her mother’s only regret is, “I wish someone would have told me about chiropractic a long time ago.”

What About Asthma?

Posted: May 15, 2013

Asthma is one of the fastest growing chronic illnesses in the United States. Some researchers report that over 15 million Americans, including 4 million children, are affected.

They also report that the death rate from asthma has increased more than 66% since 1980 with a record 6,600 annual deaths attributed to asthma (Newsweek, May 1997).

An asthma attack is caused by an inflammatory response causing constriction of the bronchial tubes. Many different types of irritants can trigger such an attack. Although something may trigger an attack, it is not the cause of the attack. In fact, some researches are suggesting that the use of antibiotics and vaccines may be contributing factors to the rise of asthma in our population.

Conventional treatment includes the use of bronchial dilators, steroids and allergy desensitization shots to ease the symptoms of asthma.

Although in a critical situation these measures can be lifesaving, there is mounting evidence that serious problems often result because of their use.

“Our approach to asthma has been woefully inadequate and misguided, our medications have worsened the condition over the long term, and few of our doctors have developed the kind of comprehensive programs that emphasize healing and prevention.” – Dr. Firshein, Reversing Asthma

Chiropractic Perspective

A properly functioning nerve system should be the first priority when addressing any health issue, including asthma. It is the nerve system that controls all of our body’s functions. The nerve system works by transmitting messages or impulses to all parts of our body.

The brain, via messages sent over the nerve system, controls breathing. If these messages are not getting through, this affects the respiratory muscles, causing them to expand or contract.

The tone of the bronchial tubes may be affected as well. The sympathetic nerves carry signals to open those tubes and the parasympathetic nerves carry signals that close the tubes. Interference on any of these nerve pathways will lead to malfunction.

How can chiropractic help?

It is well documented that spinal bones can misalign, blocking vital nerve flow throughout the body. This phenomenon is referred to as subluxation. By correcting a person’s spinal subluxations and removing the nerve interference, the nerve system begins to regain its ability to carry messages from the brain to the body and back again without interference. When this occurs, the body is better able to begin the healing process needed to address the respiratory malfunction.

This gives the person with asthma a better chance at healing and restoring overall better health.

A study of the effects of chiropractic care of patients with asthma revealed the following results: 80.5% were either totally well or much improved, 12.1% were slightly improved and 6.5% stayed the same.

A study that was published in a Holland Medical Journal reported that out of a group of 115 families with asthmatic children, 73% had utilized chiropractic care and 92% of the families reported that chiropractic was beneficial for their children.

The Brisbane Asthma Study reported that chiropractic was the most frequently consulted form of alternative health care and chiropractic received a satisfaction rate of 86.5% - The Medical Journal of Australia.

A Dangerous Misconception...

Posted: April 22, 2013
By: Dr George Auger

Sometime during the ages of man's existence man has been taught that he can gauge how healthy he is by how he feels. This is one of the most dangerous misconceptions man has ever learned to accept.

Aches, pains, and symptoms in general are not a definite indication of an unhealthy body, nor are the lack of symptoms an accurate indication of a healthy body!

For example, let us suppose you stopped at a restaurant and ordered a hamburger. The sandwich happens to be spoiled, and on the way home you begin to vomit and have diarrhea. You conclude that you are sick (unhealthy) and must somehow stop the vomiting and diarrhea.

In this situation are you actually unhealthy?

The answer is no. Because your body is healthy it begins to clear out (by vomiting and diarrhea) the poison (spoiled meat) from your system as quickly as possible. You would be unhealthy if you could not quickly clear out the toxins from your body, because the poison would then get locked into organs and muscles, setting you up for more dangerous health problems or even death.

Now let's take a person who is subluxated.

A subluxation occurs when a spinal bone misaligns and interferes with the transmission of mental impulses over the nerve pathways. The brain via the nervous system is responsible for controlling and coordinating all the functions of life.

Therefore, if a subluxation exists, your entire body will suffer.

A person walking around with a subluxation is being robbed of their vital ability to optimally control and regulate their own body.

The loss of optimal function often happens so slowly and subtly that you are unaware that anything is wrong. In this all too common situation, the subluxation has existed, weakening and hindering the body's ability to properly function, for months or even years. At some point, long after the body has lost optimal control over the way it functions, the body will begin to give off symptoms or warning signs.

For example, a person on his way home from the doctor's office for a routine checkup and was pronounced "healthy" runs out of gas only a block away from the gas. He pushes the car to the gas pump and, while standing there catching his breath, he falls over with a heart attack!

Just minutes earlier he had no detectable symptoms and was pronounced "healthy" by the physician.

The fact is, he was unhealthy for a long time prior to his heart "giving out."

This scenario is not as rare as you may think. Many of us personally know of an individual who was seemingly "well" one day only to become "mysteriously" sick the next day. Sicknesses, like cancer, heart problems, and internal organ problems, do not just happen overnight.

However, sometimes we think that they do because there is often no perceivable symptom until the process has progressed to an advanced stage.

The analogies above are but a few of the many I could share with you. I hope this helps you understand why chiropractors refer to subluxations as the "Silent Killers."

Our point is vital and must be made abundantly clear. A lack of symptoms is a very dangerous way of deciding whether you are in good health. Symptoms, or a lack thereof, are an even poorer way of determining the need for chiropractic care.

There is only one way to know if you need chiropractic care or not: Be checked by a person who is professionally trained to locate, analyze, and correct this very devastating form of interference to the nervous system ...... be checked by your Chiropractor!

Say NO To Drugs

By: Dr George Auger

We have all hear the saying “Say NO to Drugs!” However, the effectiveness of this campaign has been marginal, at best.

There is a very good reason for this…one that you may have never thought of before: It is irrational to tell our children from their earliest informative years that there is a “pill for every ill” and then to tell them to say NO to drugs when they are stressed, anxious, or even depressed.

What a mixed message!

Our culture has pounded into our consciousness that we do not need to feel any pain or discomfort because there is usually a drug that will drown out those unwanted feelings. So when our children reach those rocky teenage years, is it really a surprise that they turn to alcohol and illicit drugs to drown out those awkward feelings? If not those types of drugs, then parents turn to the prescribed drugs, as if they are any better.

Do you see the problem?

The problem is, in our attempt for utopia, we have medicated ourselves beyond recognition.

Is that the answer?

I would forcefully contend that medicating our children so that they sit in a classroom for hours on end and don’t feel depressed, anxious, or even overwhelmed is not only skirting reality but causing our children serious harm!

Life is not going to be void of these cycles of life. Rather than medicate our children from birth on, we need to teach them that their body is a self-healing, self-regulating organism designed by God! We need to teach our children to take care of themselves as if they were as valuable as a 2 million dollar Stradivarius violin, because they are!

Our children need to understand how to cope with different cycles of life, and they need to understand that medicating themselves into a state of numbness is not the answer!

It starts at home.

It starts with not teaching them, by your actions, that every time they struggle with a sickness or an awkward situation, a drug is the answer.

Give The Body What It Needs!

Recently I attended a breakfast with other healthcare providers, mostly medical doctors. The breakfast was about the importance of whole food nutrition, particularly that of Juice Plus.

Juice Plus is a whole food nutritional product that my family and I have taken over the last decade. It is, in my humble opinion, a fantastic way to bridge the gap between the amount of raw fruits and vegetables you are currently getting and the amount that you should be consuming.

What I found extremely interesting was that the presenter made the point, several times in fact, that Juice Plus has more third party research than any other whole food nutritional supplement. However, the published research was NOT condition based but instead the research was functional improvement based.

In other words, the research does not revolve around how Juice Plus can help treat diabetes, or heart disease, or cancer, etc. The research revolves around how the nutrients received through Juice Plus improves the function of the immune system, cardiac function, digestive function etc.

This was interesting for many reasons.

Firstly, Chiropractic is a lot like Juice Plus.

Chiropractic is NOT the treatment for any disease of condition. Chiropractic improves the connection between your brain and body and thereby improves your overall function. It is true that people with conditions get better under chiropractic care, but it is not because chiropractic specifically treated that condition. People with conditions get better because chiropractic care improved their body’s functional capability. Then, in turn, their body was better able to heal.

I found it interesting that Juice Plus took that same approach, which is also one of the reasons why we recommend Juice Plus to our patients.

Secondly, I found it extremely interesting that the medical doctors at the breakfast had an extremely hard time wrapping their collective heads around this concept of NOT treating a condition but improving overall function.

This became extremely evident by the continued questions they would ask the presenter – questions like, “Do you think that Juice Plus would be good for my patient with _____?” (You fill in the blank) The MDs asked question after question about how to “prescribe” Juice Plus to their patients with all these different conditions. What was obviously lost to these MDs was that Juice Plus is whole food NUTRITION. When you give the body the nutrients that it is depleted in, the body will respond by functioning at a higher level no matter what the disease is called.

Finally, it would seem apparent that in our healthcare culture today, MDs in particular are unable to think about anything other than treating disease.

MDs are sickness care specialists. Their entire professional world revolves around diagnosing and treating disease. They cannot understand the concept of health and wellness – only the concept of treating disease.

One of the most wonderful things that I LOVE about my profession is that we are all about improving function and improving health and wellness within the person (not matter what the disease is called).

Think about it!

Medicine Vs. Chiropractic

What can Chiropractic do for my _________ (you fill in the blank)?

This is a question that I get multiple times every day. That blank could be back pain, arm pain, leg pain, disc problems, high blood pressure, decreased immunity, allergies, ADD/ADHD or many other conditions.

And the answer to this question just may surprise you!

One of the fundamental differences between medicine and chiropractic is this: In medicine, the doctor diagnoses the disease process and specifically treats the disease process, while Chiropractic takes a different approach.

Chiropractic’s approach is not to treat the disease, but to restore balance (homeostasis) within the body by treating Subluxations. Subluxations are caused when the spinal bones interfere with the brain’s ability to send messages to the body to coordinate function and the body loses balance or homeostasis.

A loss of balance or homeostasis within the body will cause the body to malfunction and develop issues, like the ones listed above. Rather than focus on the issue or the symptom (the disease process), chiropractic seeks to reconnect the brain and body communication network so that the body has better control over its own function.

When that is accomplished, the body starts to function appropriately and is able to restore homeostasis or balance. This balance reduces or even eliminates the symptoms, issues, and disease process, because almost all these issues are due to the malfunction caused by a disconnect between the brain and the body.

But the benefit of a properly functioning body goes well beyond the resolution of unwanted symptoms. When the brain has full communication (via the nerves) with the entire body, the person has more energy, better reflexes, better mental acuity, more strength, better digestion, better cardiac function, even better immunity!

Whether you have symptoms or not, wouldn’t you want all of these benefits?

Chiropractic is different for many reasons, but the difference between medicine and chiropractic concerns what each profession focuses on. Medicine focuses on disease. Chiropractic focuses on Subluxation. One treats disease, the other improves function by restoring homeostasis. So to answer the original question: “What can Chiropractic do for my _______?”  Chiropractic can remove any Subluxation, restore the lines of communication, and allow the body to function at the genetic potential that God designed.

As for me and my family, we choose to be a Chiropractic family first and use medicine as a last resort. What about you?

Introducing Real Health

Welcome to Auger Family Chiropractic’s blog! I’m Dr. Auger, and I’ll be your blogger! Now, I’m not even sure what blogging is exactly…BUT, what I am sure about is that I love to write about current events as they pertain to health and other health related topics (maybe even throw in some personal stuff too, if that’s alright).

In this first blog I want to address one of the most dangerous misconceptions about health that I know.

What is that you ask?

It’s the misconception that health is merely the absence of disease or pain. In other words, “if I feel fine I must be fine. If I have no pain or just a little bit of bearable pain, and I do not have a disease, then I believe I am healthy.”

Really? Is health merely the absence of disease and/or pain?

Let me ask you a series of three questions. First, would you rather be wealthy or just not poor? I think we can all agree that being wealthy is much better than being just not poor. Second, would you rather be intelligent or just not stupid? Again the absence of stupidity doesn’t mean you are intelligent. It just means you are just not stupid! There is a BIG difference! Lastly, would you rather be healthy or just not sick?

So here is the point: the absence of sickness is not the same as experiencing health and vitality.

Have you been settling for just not being sick? Even worse, have you been settling for being sick and trying to control that sickness through pharmacology, thinking that’s all there is?

There is a better way!

Learn what health truly is and then go for it! On many levels I hope this blog does just that ….helps you learn how to think healthy and live a healthier, happier, more vibrant life!
